STOCK DONKEY DERBY
The weather was kind and spectators arrived en-masse, for the 18th Stock Donkey Derby, staged by Brentwood Lions Club at Brocks Farm on Sunday 7th September. This was the biggest and best yet when families and individuals arrived to take advantage of the facilities on offer and to partake of the BBQ food, Candy Floss, Pimms, wine, beer, ice cream, cakes or just a cup of tea or coffee. Side attractions included numerous stands with particular emphasis for children, including face painting, bouncy castle, crockery crash and much more. The donkeys arrived, to the relief of the organisers (since they had travelled by lorry from Surrey around the M25), a short time after the gates were opened. They were soon taken to their enclosure in preparation for the races or, in the case of younger visitors, for a more sedate donkey ride.
The event opened with a commendable performance of singing and dancing, by children from the Windmill Theatre School. Between races more entertainment was provided by artistes from the Helen Arber Performing Arts School.
Brentwood Lions took responsibility for registering jockeys comprising very willing children between 10 and 15 years of age. A similar registration was required for those wanting a donkey ride. Hard hats were worn by all riders and parental consent was required before any were allowed to mount their donkey.
The Tote saw many hopeful punters attempting to take home more money than they had come with. Fortunately nobody was seen who had 'lost their shirt'.
The members of Brentwood Lions Club were pleased to raise funds which this year will go mainly to Farleigh Hospice, McMillan Nurses, Huntingtons Disease Association, Leukaemia Research and Stock Village Hall. We are grateful to all those that supported the event, particularly Ed Napp for the use of his land, John Sawkins who was the Commentator, the Royal Air Force Air Cadets for marshalling and, St. John Ambulance who's services we were pleased not to take advantage of.
